?STATE OF THE NATION’ ? a summary of addresses during significant times in American history

American Civil War

The American Civil War (1861-1865) was a defining moment in history between the Southern Slave States (Confederates) and the Northern Free States (Union) with the Confederates wanting to keep slavery and the Union wanting to abolish it. We all know the outcome on that one. The State of the Union speeches during this time are a fascinating read. Here is my summary. For a more detailed look at this time in American history, this video is a great buy –> The Civil War – A Film by Ken Burns

Obviously, the war was a huge part of Abraham Lincoln’s speeches during this time but there was also a lot going on aside from the war. During this time, there was a healthy harvest each year, finances were very healthy which is surprising considering the cost of war. The Department of Agriculture was created and relations with China and Europe were good but sometimes strained with Japan (a sign of things to come maybe?). The plan for a pacific railroad was brought to the table and work commenced, again, surprising considering the amount of men caught up in the war. Similarly, the pacific and atlantic telegraph lines were planned and established.

Bankrupt State Governments, More Pain For State Citizens, No Courage at The Top

Fascinating, if depressing, analysis in the February 11, 2011 issue of The Week magazine regarding the dire economic straits of our state governments.  As a word of caution, please do not read the following if you have a weak stomach or you actually think the economy is going to get very healthy in the next few years (it is not):

Open Letter to National Urban League President Mark Morial

The Demands:
1. The Minneapolis Urban League to immediately be put into Affiliate Receivership.
2. An open election for the Board of Directors.
3. An election for President of the MUL drawn from a pool of local candidates, or the immediate appointment of Pamela Coxaum (Tucker) as President.
4. An audit of the Social Wellness Cluster.
5. The immediate re-hiring of Cheryl Morgan Spenser as outreach liaison.

Dear Mr. Morial,

I’m sure you already aware of the Minneapolis Urban League’s attempt to establish a training program, as written about in the Minnesota Public Radio story, “MnDOT grant to help minorities get construction work.” The community has been told that the model will be one similar to a model followed in Milwaukee, WI. Still today, we have no published action plan on how one hundred and fifty thousand dollars in a sympathy grant can get Black residents of Minneapolis to work.

How To Find a Pizza – Geo Local Search

We all have our own vices.  Among mine is a love for oven-baked, flat, disc-shaped bread typically topped with a tomato sauce, cheese (usually mozzarella) and various toppings. Pizza.

According to a 2006 report there were 69,386 Pizza Stores in the US.  No wonder why it is so difficult figuring out which one to order from when I get the late night pizza “munchies.”   In fact, pizza restaurants comprise nearly 8% of all restaurants in America.  These statistics really got me thinking.  With so many pizza restaurants around, how do they all differentiate themselves – especially on the Web?

I work in Plainsboro, NJ, a sleepy little town tucked away among the few remaining sprawling farms and fighting hard to preserve what is left of its original rural character.   Only a few miles from Princeton University, Plainsboro’s national claim to fame, these days, is probably its unmistakable connection with the hit FOX television medical series, “House.”  Plainsboro is the setting for Princeton-Plainsboro Medical Center in which Dr. Gregory “House” blends modern medicine with playful sarcasm.   Fitting with the show’s sometimes “cart before the horse approach to medical treatment,” is that the town of Plainsboro is only – now – building what will soon be the real Princeton-Plainsboro Medical Center, just outside of its tiny downtown.

Kanha National Park

Tiger, the national animal of India is a majestic animal; known as the king of the jungle it is not easy to have an audience with him or see him. People from all over the world visit different national parks in India to see a wild tiger. But, with 39 tiger reserves where should you head to so as to have a good sighting of this endangered species. Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Maharashtra are three states where most tourist flock to see wildlife especially tigers but with 12 tiger reserves it is not easy to choose the right destination.

Every reserve has its own advantages and disadvantages so you have many options. If you can takeout enough time i.e. around three nights for each national park and visit three to four of them that’s a good way but than it needs a lot of travelling, packing and unpacking and again packing. Another option is to go to any one or two for 5 to 6 days each which will make your trip less tiring and you will also have time to go around local villages and enjoy and understand local tribal culture.

Torn between- the Nation and the Religion: Part II

TORN BETWEEN THE NATION AND THE RELIGION:  part II

Leaders of Indian freedom of struggle having a substantially large following among the believers in diverse faiths like Hindus Muslims and others did not accept,  the two nation theory propounded by the erstwhile colonisers as such. The masses formally embraced the concept of India -phenomena that had existed in this land for ages but got crystallised during struggle for independence and formalised between 15th August 1947 and 26th January 1950. An idea of a secular Indian republic had taken a shape, and a size that wanted then to follow a socialistic pattern of society,

Local Philippines: Go Gaga in Guimaras

Looking for an idyllic setting for your next vacation in the Philippines? Pack your bags and head to the beautiful island province of Guimaras. Located in the Western Visayas region, Guimaras is highly touted for its unspoiled beaches that are considered one of the world’s finest. It has a wide array of resorts and accommodations that cater to the needs of both local and foreign tourists.

Like other provinces in the country, Guimaras also has its fine share of tourist attractions. Since the province is blessed with vast agricultural lands, the local government has been stepping up efforts to promote Guimaras as a premier agritourism site in the Philippines. Orchards, bee farms, and aqua culture ponds have been added to list of must-see attractions in the island.

Most Bike Friendly Cities in the United States

Bicycling.com recently released its annual list of the most bike-friendly cities in the country, and Minneapolis has made the cut once again.

Minneapolis is already revered nation-wide as being an over-the-top bike-friendly city.  It was also recently recognized by the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) and designated as a “Bicycle Friendly Community,” which included the coveted a silver status ranking from the organization, which is dedicated to promoting bicycling for fun, fitness, and transportation.  The four-year designation is handed out to communities that have demonstrated impressive, measurable efforts to integrate bicyclists into the community.

Harry Brull, LAB board member, presented the award to Mayor Rybak.  He said that out of the 210 communities that had applied to receive the designation only 84 have received awards.  The LAB application committee recognized Minneapolis for its high percentage of bike commuters; the investments it has made in bike-friendly improvements, including the Midtown Bike Depot, and education and awareness campaigns, including the city’s Bike Ambassador Program.

Find Local Montclair NJ Electrician and Electrical Contractors

When choosing an electrician, there are a number of factors to consider. One of the most important is to make sure the electrician is properly licensed, and whether he will guarantee his or her work in writing.

Any experienced electrician should also be able to provide you with a list of references, with phone numbers so you will have the opportunity to reach out to them directly. Please, do you due diligence and call at least three of them. Ask others about the electricianâÃÂÃÂs professionalism, quality of work, courtesy, timeliness, etc. Were they satisfied with the way everything went? If they had any issues after the project was completed. If so, were they able to get them taken care of to their satisfaction?

Professional and trade references from the electrician as well. Or you may want to contact a consumer advocacy group like the Better Business Bureau in your area to see if there have been any complaints registered in the past.
